When Tunday Akintan approached me to DJ alongside him playing saxophone, I did not know who he was.
A quick google search gave me a little information. He is a saxophonist, pianist and vocalist, as well as the pioneer of Yorubeat Music. When I travelled to his bar in Lewisham, Lagos Bar he described his vision for his new night. 'Out of the Box' is a fusion of DJs, vocalists and live musicians coming together with the aim of creating something new, different and exciting.
Tunday's passion is infectious and he backs it up with some solid work on the saxophone. I have never played out with a live musician before and loved the extra dimension the sax brings. House and sax are the perfect match and I loved jamming with Tunday to create a unique sound.
Choosing my setlist for the jam was the biggest challenge. I found the following helped in my selection of tracks:
- Tracks with a solid and consistent groove
- Tracks with a laidback vibe
- Vocals used sparsely (Dubs are good!)
- No tracks carrying a strong sax lead! (or whichever instrument you are playing)
It was a blast playing with Tunday and I look forward to throwing down at his Out of the Box Party later this month!
